I would not recommend it due to the fact that the clearcoar will have a hard time adhering to yhe vinyl. It would seperate from the vinyl and look bad.Can you put layers of clearcoat paint over vinyl graphics on a car to make them last and look better?
you can put poop on a feather, dont mean it will flyCan you put layers of clearcoat paint over vinyl graphics on a car to make them last and look better?
the anwers is yes and no. there is opaintable vinyl usually you have to spray your color on first (the key here is your color is reduced anywhere form 50-100 percent depending on the brand and the effect your doing) you have to sand or scotchbrite the vinyl. most of these ';paintable'; vinynals are 3mills thick. now with that said there is a couple companys out there that do printout a vinyl with graphics on it. i personally havent tried them but ive see them and seen a 71 charger with the ';dukes of hazzards'; graphics all in vinyl from the flag to the 01 on it. it was cleared wet sanded and recleared buffed and 2-3 years later its still looks good no pealing. you should be able to do a web search under ';paintable vinyl'; 3m does make a product that you can paint on. ive used it to carry graphics threw windows (this comes in a white and a cream color if memory serves me right and it is different from the vinyl your talking about that has some sort of a print on it like fire or a picture). as any painter or automtive artist knows ';star';
shapes are a real pain in the ****. so this project peeked my interest to a point and im still keeping track of this car.
the thing you have to remember is vinyl is a plastic. paint needs not only a mechanical but it needs a molecular bound to become one with the median. with plastics the goal is to slightly melt the plasic so the sealer, primer or basecoat will dry with it and become one. with bare metal u use an acid primer that bonds to the metal and becomes one. paint repairs just pick a concept .... over reduced clear , adhesion promoters .. each company has there own special mix and concept for this. this is the same concept with welding.
im sorry i dont have the companies names off hand but what yu can do is write the companies to send you a sample (you will want 10 -20 total figure 3 per body shop) now then what you do is mark the samples and lets say you got 3 different types (you want thick stuff) take a sample of each to sevral GOOD bodyshops or custom shops. tell them your deal i am sure they will jump at the chance to test them out. now let the paint (base clear or just clear) dry for about 2-3 weeks and go get some good sticky tape. press the tape on the sample hard wait a few secs and then try and rip it off. if it doesn peal then yur probabely good to go. although if it does work i would keep your paint job covered while not drivng and do not use pressure washers or brushes to wash your car (this is just a standard for any after market paint job)
oo very important mos vinyals that are ';auto paint'; friendly can not handle sealer or primers . you get too much build up of paint and solvents from primer/selaer to base to clear.
ive used paintable vinyls on multi million dollar busses and cars ive charged 10k to paint i have yet to see them fail except for application error
good luck
you can do that but the object you are clearcoating will have to be extremely clean or it won't look very good. clearcoat is really meant to be used with fresh paint.
