Will vinyl wallcoverings destroy paint underneath?

My landlord won't let me paint my purple bedroom so I was hoping to put up removable vinyl wall coverings, but was wondering if this would destroy the paint underneath it. What do you think? Will vinyl wallcoverings destroy paint underneath?
Far too risky - if he won't let you paint he is going to be a stickler for any damage. How do you plan to fix this - most things over time will cause a problem of discolouration or peeling. You need some independent way of covering the wall. Will vinyl wallcoverings destroy paint underneath?
They shouldnt destroy the paint underneath. However, if you leave them on the wall for an extended period, the paint around the vinyl will fade and the space covered will be darker, once the vinyl is removed.
