Question about painting vinyl siding?

Our house is a pale grey, almost white. Originally I wanted to get tan siding because I like that better, but it's too expensive. My mom suggested we just paint the siding. I have read that it's not good to paint it darker than the original color, to avoid buckling. Would going from light gray to a light tan hurt anything?Question about painting vinyl siding?
You have to be sure that you clean it thoroughly and then get a very good primer to put on before your paint. This website has some information for painting vinyl siding. Hope this helps!

My home is 12 years old and the vinyl siding and aluminum soffit are faded. I heard you can paint it.?

Is this true? If so, how long does it last, and any recommendations. ThanksMy home is 12 years old and the vinyl siding and aluminum soffit are faded. I heard you can paint it.?
Latex or acrylic paint will adhere to vinyl siding without the need for a primer. Its good to wash the siding first to remove any dirt, pollen and mildew. The big thing when painting vinyl siding is not to paint darker than the original color. Dark colors absorb the sun's heat and which cause warping. Weathered aluminum can be painted the same way.My home is 12 years old and the vinyl siding and aluminum soffit are faded. I heard you can paint it.?
Yes, you can paint aluminum siding and soffits. But it is NOT recommended. Why? Prior to painting, you must completely wash the aluminum. After it is dry, you must lightly sand paper the surface. Then you can apply the paint. BUT, the new surface of paint will only last a maximum of 3 years. Now you must do the whole job over again. And re-doing the job is more difficult because you must remove the 1st layer of paint. Cheaper to call in a contractor and re-side and soffit. The whole purpose of aluminum siding is that it's good looking and last a very long time. Maybe just washing it with a hose would help? Or possibly washing and light spray with an adherent chemical. Check at the paint store or a home products store. I'm sure there must be a product on the market for that purpose. Good Luck.
you can paint it, problem is that unless you wash it and prime it, the paint will not stay on

What are the steps in painting exterior vinyl siding?

I think it is vinyl although it may be aluminum. What are the steps in painting exterior vinyl siding?
It just needs to be clean. Keep in mind, painted siding looks like painted siding. Good luck. What are the steps in painting exterior vinyl siding?
This is not recommended. However, you can look into ripping all of the vinyl siding off the house and then repainting. Usually, when vinyl siding is put on a house, it is placed right over the original siding.

However, when they do this they don't seal or weatherproof the original exterior first.

I had a house once with vinyl siding and we would consistently have a slight breeze in the house coming from the outside.

So, I ripped off all of the vinyl, weatherproofed, and then painted the place and it solved the problem and saved us a great deal in energy costs.

For more information on exterior painting in Colorado or your home state, visit http://www.coloradofauxpainting.com/exte鈥?/a>
Vinyl is made from a PVC (polyvinyl chloride) plastic. Unlike wood or cedar, it won't rot or flake. Vinyl is usually less expensive to purchase and install than most other siding materials. There are, however, drawbacks. Vinyl can crack, fade, or grow dingy over time. Vinyl is also controversial because of environmental concerns.
I would not suggest painting vinyl siding. Aluminum siding can be painted, but it should be done professionally. I would look into getting the siding replaced if it is that bad. The end result will be worth it, because it will look better and last a lot longer.

Can you paint over vinyl flooring?

ripped up carpet in hall it is orginal vinyl from 1976 great shape awful color can you paint ?Can you paint over vinyl flooring?
That's not going to work. Paint isn't made to be stepped on.

Were you hoping for wood floors?

You can lay a new vinyl floor right over the top of it (cheapest option).

You can pull it up and refinish the floor below it (not always possible if they aren't hardwood).

You can install a floating floor laminate on top (looks like hardwood). Can you paint over vinyl flooring?
You could. You can do anything, but I don't know if you would really want to.

  • Is true that NASCAR cars are covered with 200 MPH vinyl sticker rather than paint?

LIFEIs true that NASCAR cars are covered with 200 MPH vinyl sticker rather than paint?
Yes, that is very true.Is true that NASCAR cars are covered with 200 MPH vinyl sticker rather than paint?
yep i seen them decal Elliott saddlers car last year . pretty cool to watch
Well, they're not 'covered' as you put it. They leave the windshield uncovered.
Wow, ihateyou is a Rocket Scientist. Like the other ones have said it is true. If I remember right I think it saves the teams alot of money.
    yup
Yes,the teams get a more uniformed and smoother surface making the car more Areo dynamic. The old painting then apply a vynal number caused a ';lip'; that would break up air flow.A few of the lower budget teams still paint their cars.
    Yes, it's true.
Yup, its vinyl not paint. Though in the early days of NASCAR it was paint but gradually became vinyl. The last instance that I recall that paint was used on a modern day NASCAR (now the 'Car of Yesterday') was Jeff Gordon %26amp; Jimmie Johnson's entrys in the 2006 Daytona 500. But that was a 1 race deal. No special event as the reason why just trying to get any kind of aerodynamic advantge they could was the reason I heard.
    yeahh.
Most of the cars have a basic paint job applied just for the main colors, but the graphics are all vinyl decals. Paint weighs much less than vinyl does.
Like the others said yes they do.

BUT, in some cases at Superspeedways like at Dega and Daytona. Teams will go with paint, because some times they believe it might give a small, (very small) aerodynamic advantage.

Case in point Gordon last year at the Superspeedways.
    yeppppppp

the paint would pill off ahaha
ihateyou go play with dolls rather than try to answer simple questions that you know nothing about
Yep. They do that so teams can bring an extra car, leave it painted white, and say it's JGR, if Denny Hamlin ends up totaling two cars, they just have to throw the decals on the car and it's a Fed/Ex car, but they could do the same whether it was for Stewart or Busch. Very smart. Some teams think it helps with Aerodynamics too.

    Interior vinyl & fabric paint?

i recently painted the interior of my truck with dupli-color vinyl and fabric interior spray paint. i used gloss black on the dash and doors it looked good . but its only been a few months and its already coming off. is there any seal or coat i can use to help prevent it when i repaint it?Interior vinyl %26amp; fabric paint?
dupli color paint is not very good, if you,ll clean it real good and use a brand called sems,on it this will stay on it,but getting it clean is the key to any of it lasting,i have never had any of the sems brand come off yet,and the door panels on my truck are painted with it,and that's been about 5 years ago,and they still look as good as they did when i sprayed them, find that brand ,and it will stay on it,good luck with it.Interior vinyl %26amp; fabric paint?
Flat on the dash for glare.Guess you didn't prep it as it should of stayed.Wipe it with something that cuts it.To get the oil %26amp; wax off an repaint it. That paint is for covering same color not much luck on changing colors???

Painting Vinyl Wallpaper with Kitchen Paint...?

we rent our house and currently have limited funds so I was wondering if i can paint the Kitchen wallpaper? theres bathroom n kitchen paint in B%26amp;Q but it says its matt paint, would this work?Painting Vinyl Wallpaper with Kitchen Paint...?
If you try to paint vinyl or any shiny paint with emulsion it will slip all over. First you need to either apply a water-based primer like Bullseye 1-2-3 or prime-it plus carefully or an oil-based undercoat, either applied carefully with a 4 inch foam roller so it doesn't slide around everywhere. Then you can emulsion as normal. There are not many bathrooms where matt paint is ideal, but a water-based satin or eggshell would resist condensation better.

The best paint in a bathroom is Dulux quick-drying eggshell, but it is an arm and a leg. Apart from the aforementioned undercoat, try and stay away from putting oil-based paints on walls.Painting Vinyl Wallpaper with Kitchen Paint...?
Vinyl wallpaper is far less porous than wallpapers made from paper or fabric. Because it's vinyl, it's easier to install and cleans up with a damp cloth. But like other wallpapers, vinyl wallpaper can be difficult to remove. If you want to paint your wall without removing the vinyl wallpaper, you need to alter the integrity of its surface. You need to prepare the vinyl so that it will accept both primer and paint. Otherwise, the paint will ';thin'; and the wallpaper will show through.

    Things You'll Need:

    Razor-edged roller tool

    Fine-grit sandpaper

    Primer

    Paint

Short nap roller and painting supplies

Wash the surface of the wallpaper with a degreaser. Clean it with a cotton cloth or sponge and rinse the degreaser off using clean water. Dry with a cloth and let dry for one to two hours.

Step 2Score the wallpaper. Scoring the paper will break the surface tension. You can do this with a commercially available product such as Paper Tiger, or you can improvise and use a ravioli cutter or similar tool. You need a razor-edged roller to roll over the paper. Use broad strokes; you do not need to score every inch of the surface.

Step 3Lightly sand the wallpaper with fine-grit sandpaper. Do not use a sander. Just as you did to score the surface, use broad strokes, just enough to break down the surface. Wipe clean with a cotton cloth.

Step 4Apply a coat of quality primer to the wall. If you are painting the wall a dark, rich color, tint the primer to a shade two or three shades lighter than your paint color. Allow the primer to dry for 24 hours. If you are applying a light-colored paint and the wallpaper is dark, apply a second coat of primer for better coverage.

Step 5Apply a coat of quality flat or semi-gloss paint to the wall. Use a short nap roller to apply the paint, as the wallpaper surface, even with the primer, is more like a smooth wall than a textured wall. Allow the paint to dry for 24 hours before applying a second coat.
I think it would be ok - the bathroom and kitchen paint from Band q is very good.

Maybe best to test it first on a small section, and be prepared to give it a couple of coats.

If needed - best to wash the paper down first

with sparse amount of water and soap.

Can I paint a vinyl foor:?

YES, wash the floor with TSP, prime with a good stain killing primer and paint with a good quality Latex paint. Paints yrs ago did not streach like the latex paints do today. As long as you prep the floor properly it will work but you get what you pay for so dont skimp on the quality of the paint. It will work Trust me Ive done it many timesCan I paint a vinyl foor:?
    No,no,and no again...sorry!!Can I paint a vinyl foor:?
You can if you use a good quality primer....wouldnt advise it though it wouldnt be long term....rip it up and replace it or lay ceramic floors...they'll last a lifetime...
No because the paint will crack.
No, I wouldn't consider painting a vynil floor.

1: consider all of the wax build up aready on the floor.

2: it would never hold up to day to day activities.

3: I've never heard of painting a vynil floor.

Of course you can do it, anything is possible.
Yes, but you really need to do the prep work required for the new paint to adhere. And when you are finished painting you should clear coat with several coats of urethane to seal the floor.

Kilz probably makes a primer specifically for this type of situation. I would consider painting with a porch paint, as it is designed for hardier wear.
yes, you just get some vinyl paint .your hardware store will tell you which type
Oh yes.. it can be done and I have seen it done.. Even my mother did it on our floor when I was young.. what a mess. the paint will chip off in short time and making it look worse than befoere..

Will red paint de-laminate my vinyl-coated metal front door?

I recently purchased a multi-section, manufactured home which is 10 years old. I bought Valspar exterior glossy Fabulous Red for the front door (there's a storm door, too.) I live in Indiana. This door faces mostly south and there's no shade in the yard. I've been told that temperatures can reach 200 degrees between the two doors.

Will any dark color be a problem? I've been told that red will cause the vinyl to blister and peel off. Will red paint de-laminate my vinyl-coated metal front door?
the paint wont its the heat build up between the doors that will affect the doorWill red paint de-laminate my vinyl-coated metal front door?
I'd be a bit hesitant to go with such a darker color. Vinyl expands and contract naturally more than most other products and now you want to complicate it with a heat absorbing color in a ';greenhouse'; like environment just behind the storm door.

Talk to a good paint retailer and ask them what they feel will work.
we live in Arkansas and it gets really hot here and have a double wide with a vinyl covered door and I painted it dark blue several years ago and it looks just fine. In fact the factory white paint peeled off rather quickly which was the reason for painting it in the first place so you should have not problems with painting it in my opinion it should actually weather better.
You assume too much about the existing finish of your door. Before you entertain another finish, you must comprehend what allready exhists! Untill you can discerne what is there, you are just flying blind into a morbid desire of quick gratification. Yes-she is on your ***! No- you know you can be very gratifying. Be your man and do a manly thing.-Period and end of discusion!

What kins of paint do i use to paint on vinyl?

I used to do custom work on vinyl tire covers, like the ones you see on the back of jeeps. I used enamels from a local hardware store. The paint comes in 1/2 pint cans to, which is convenient. Great for stuff that is exposed to the weather.

If the vinyl has a rough surface and will remain indoors and not be rubbed up against, like wall art, you can use regular acrylics. What kins of paint do i use to paint on vinyl?
What kind of vinyl? What will it be used for? What kind of wear and tear will the piece be exposed to?

These kinds of questions need to be answered before being able to give an intelligent answer.

Some auto parts stores, especially auto paint supply stores, have a brand of vinyl paint made for your purpose. It is called SEM brand,it comes in spray cans. The stuff does a great job.About the only thing that can go wrong is if the surface has been coated with Armor All in the last year.If that's the case, clean it thoroughly first with a solvent made for the purpose.
no all it will do is chip and look like crap

Is it safe to put vinyl siding over lead based paint?

I have never heard you can't enclose anything painted with lead base paint.

As long as the paint is not disturbed (like sanding) it is not hazardous. When the siding is being nailed, you could be extra cautious about a little flaking from puncturing it.I don't think that is necessary, unless there are large bubbles, that you could sweep up. 8/27Is it safe to put vinyl siding over lead based paint?
The EPA / HUD regulations state that ';enclosure'; (covering with siding) is an accepted lead paint abatement method. As the other answer stated make sure not to disturb the old paint as you do.

    2 additional items:

    Make sure all the seams are ';dust tight';

before you side the building you should staple ';WARNING'; Tape about every 2 feet on the old siding. This is usually 3'; red in color and it says '; WARNING. LEAD BASED PAINT BELOW';.

Years from now, if you vinyl is disturbed, the lead issue can be dealt with correctly.

Trying to remove woodchip paper painted with vinyl silk paint.any ideas please?

i am using a steamer but very hard workTrying to remove woodchip paper painted with vinyl silk paint.any ideas please?
    Im an apprentice painter.

Firstly, ive just got to say that im completely and utterly shocked. Not one person has recommended or, by the looks of it discovered the easiest way to remove wood chip paper. Also, to the people who recommended spraying a solution used for cars on the walls, putting washing up liquid in the steamer or covering the area in Nitromors (A liquid paint remover that burns the skin upon contact) i suggest you dont give advice on a subject you clearly dont understand.

    Right as for your problem, go t any store that sells painting equipment and buy a glass scraper - It looks like this;

    http://nextday.diy.com/app/jsp/product/p鈥?/a>

Basically, it cuts the paper off, and leaves part of the under paper-, so use a steamer for them parts. But for the woodchip itself, its so fast its unbelievable.

Note: You can hold the scraper on one of its 2 sides - If the scraper begins to cut into the wall, or cuts a chunk of the wall out - Change to the other side.Trying to remove woodchip paper painted with vinyl silk paint.any ideas please?
The best way i have found as a decorator is to scratch or score the surface using a stanley knife or other sharp tool taking care not to go too deep. When you have done this use hot water with washing up liquid added this helps it to soak better, apply solution to the walls using either a brush or garden sprayer and allow to soak.Be patient and do not try to remove paper until soaked right through,if you soak it enough times the paper wil virtually fall off.
    Absolutely.

Get yourself a scoring tool. I like the paper tiger. You'll find it at most home hardware stores for just a few dollars:

    http://www.zinsser.com/product_detail.as鈥?/a>

Run the scoring tool all over and every which way on the woodchip paper covered with paint. You won't have to press too hard but do make sure you've perforated the paper.

Fill a spray bottle (an old windex bottle works great) with BLUE car windshield washer liquid. Spray this all over the wall to saturate thru the holes you made with the paper tiger. Wait 10 minutes. Don't skip the waiting time... it's very important.

Sray the wall a second time to saturate again. Wait 5 minutes. Again, don't skip the waiting time.

Easily peel the paper off in huge pieces.

This works MUCH better than a steamer.

    Enjoy your paper-free wall :)
    Hi there

Get a craft knife and slash the walls in lots of different directions. Put a few drops of washing up liquid in the steam stripper then hold the stripper over a section of the wallpaper until it drops off.

It really shouldn't be hard work with this method.

    Good luck and best wishes.
You will have to puncture the paint first before you can use the steamer.Try a wire brush to get the paint off the wall paper,it don`t have to be completely just brakes in the paint.
i agree, very hard work, i have spent the last two days doing the same thing, i borrowed a spiked metal roller to puncture the paper first, good luck,
score it with a stanley knife first i meen really criss cross it then put the steamer on it , it allows the steam to get behind the paper.
I found that using a good wire brush to score the paper then give it a good soaking with hot soapy water then use your steam wallpaper stripper a good way,,its hard work but patience will be rewarded.
You can buy heavy duty scrapers in B%26amp;Q; sometimes these are the only answer, especially for woodchip.
Criss Cross it with a stanley knife and steam slowly - leave awhile and using a flexible scraper dig under it and it should then pull right off.

The secret is to SCORE THE PAPER
Paint over with Nitromos paint stripper.

If they were already painted, then they were probably primed when they were manufactured. If you used the right kind of paint for exterior vinyl, they should be OK, time will tell.

Custom and durable usually never come cheap. You can go to a auto paint shop and they can mix up just about anything that you would want for vinyl.

You can try using arylic but you have to make sure your surface is clean so wash it down with a good dish soap and make sure its rinsed well. Don't touch it after it's clean; the oil from your fingers can cause spots with low adhesion no matter what you use.

I am looking to purchase brilliant white vinyl silk paint for internal doors %26amp; framesBrilliant white vinyl silk paint for wood?
vinyl silk isnt the correct paint for wood, you would need to choose from the following 3, shinyiest to dullest- gloss then satinwood, then eggshell, good luckBrilliant white vinyl silk paint for wood?
its for wall not wood however you can get a silk effect paint for doors and woodwork from dulux its low odor but its not as durable as gloss paint
It is not a color I know. It is not an explanation of sheen I know. Whites are different from every different company. You need to get out and compare the samples. The wood should be primed and sanded before painting. Do not forget to ask about the prep work.
dont use vynal silk use satinwood for wood frames and doors its tougher and gives the same apearance ,vynal silk will chip off easily as its only water based
vinyl silk is emulsion and is for walls not wood what you need is gloss paint.
make sure it is gloss paint not emulsion. gloss for woodwork, emulsion for walls.
bad idea although it would be easier to apply than oil based paints you can also get from good diy outlets a water based satin or gloss finish that is just as easy to apply and will last a heck of a lot longer and wont fade or chip as easy HAPPY DECORATING.
Paint them with Satinwood instead. It is easy to put on and gives a lovely finish (not glossy). The store to go to for the cheapest price is (yet again) Wilkinsons.
i would.nt recommend silk vinyl on wood, it can wash off, i would stick to gloss or eggshell, but gloss preferable
Wrong stuff , for internal woodwork Brilliant White Gloss is the guy to buy. :O)
    congratulations ! happy painting
And very classy, too! Wilko's, perhaps. Hope it looks nice when finished. Good luck, and buy good brushes (otherwise the bristles keep coming out and will drive you mad).

  • Painting Vinyl Siding, How much does it cost to have a professional do it.?

My house is a standard 2-story. I believe our interior liveable square footage is around 2400 sq ft. We have vinyl siding but would like to change the color from cream to white. Just wondering how much a professional would charge to do this project, or if this is something I could do myself. Would I have to brush it on or could I use a sprayer?Painting Vinyl Siding, How much does it cost to have a professional do it.?
Personally I would keep the cream color and maybe change the trim color. You can paint it or have it painted BUT it won't last and will have to be re-painted which defeats the purpose of vinyl siding.

I have an old ugly mauve vinyl chair that I would like to paint.?

Can anyone give me any ideas on what brand of paint I should use that would do the best job. I'll probably just paint it white. I know that Rustoleum can do the job, but is there something better and has anyone ever painted vinyl like this before (ie., beanbag, etc.)?I have an old ugly mauve vinyl chair that I would like to paint.?
It can be painted with automotive upholstery paint. You will find it at an automotive paint specialty store. It is available in spray cans or can be custom mixed. You can also have it painted at a body shop.I have an old ugly mauve vinyl chair that I would like to paint.?
dont paint it, it wont last,, elastomeric compound works on a house but vinyl is too flexible,

if you have a chair, invest in a black and decker staple gun and some vinyl or nogahyde at the fabric store
might want to look at a fabric stain..would probably have to be a darker color
The paint is not flexible enough to stay on flexible plastic, it will crack and peel. Your best bet is to make (or buy) a slipcover or reupholster.
Check automotive paint supply stores. My dad painted many cars when i was young and there was a special dye he sprayed vinyl tops with. Ordinary paint is not going to work.
They have a new Krylon spray paint for plastic that I have bought and been meaning to try but haven't gotten around to it yet. Great colors! Make sure you clean the surface very well, I mean probably a bleach solution, before painting.

How do you remove water base paint off outdoor vinyl boards?

Water based paint should be removed by washing with water.

Should I install new vinyl siding or paint existing aluminum siding.?

My colonial house was built in 1966 and has aluminum siding. I was was shocked at some recent quotes to paint the exterior of the house ($4000). I hate to put that much money into something that doesn't really add any value. It got me thinking that I should consider re-siding the house instead (shingles, vinyl siding?). That said:

    1) How is Aluminum as a siding. Is this something that is a considered a good thing (more durable???). More specifically, is a move to premium vinyl siding a step up or a step down.

    2) ) If I go through the trouble of removing the aluminum siding, should I consider any other projects (are there any house wraps that can help with insulation or things like that)????

    3) What costs are involved with vinyl siding. As in, when the Home Depot guy comes for an estimate, what is he going to try to rope me into and should I bite?

Many thanksShould I install new vinyl siding or paint existing aluminum siding.?
I would paint the aluminum siding if I were you, vinyl will eventually fade, and it expands and contracts in the weather changes.

I have painted aluminum siding and if you choose a good paint it holds up well, but will eventually need to be repainted, but vinyl siding when it fades will also need repainted to look nice. A good oil base paint will hold up better than latex. It is a big task but well worth it and cheaper than vinyl siding. If you are handy at all you can do the repainting yourself and save a bundle. I would suggest power washing the siding first if you are going to paint it. Good LuckShould I install new vinyl siding or paint existing aluminum siding.?
i was in the same dilema. but i chose to repaint the aluminum siding. the paint costed about 600 dollars. luckly i knew to painters and there was no labor charge. but here are some thoughts: i remodel alot of homes and resell for profit. i have found if you find self-employed painters etc you can get a good deal if you pay cash and they do it on the side between their big paying jobs. also barter!!! i have had lots of hired people exchange their services for something that i had or for something i could do for them and this way everybody comes out ahead. example my spouse is a heavy machine operator and we had an electrician come in and do wiring and then my spouse went to his house and dug a hole for a foundation. everybody came out ahead and their was no cost only time and labor. also really check around for prices and talk to painters when you see them painting elsewhere (everybody always talks when it comes to money) plus ask around (everybody always knows somebody that does something on the side) and you can get real good deals IN OTHER WORDS LEARN HOW TO HUSSLE
I am not sure. I just wanted to thank you for showing me another reason why not to buy my own house. My wife has asked me for 10 years to do it and each time some one comes up with a maintenance problem I get to show it to her. Thanks again
    In order:

    1) Aluminum siding is generally more durable than vinyl. However, if you paint it once, you will have to keep painting it, and it's hard to get the paint to adhere.

    2) Yes, you can wrap your house in Tyvek if you strip the siding, and it will improve insulation somewhat.

    3) If you go with vinyl siding, two things to keep in mind: it is noisy in the wind, particularly the lower grades, and no matter what the salesman tells you, the color WILL fade over time.

If you're going to the trouble of having your house stripped and re-sided, consider Hardi Plank. It looks like wood siding but it is actually a kind of cement board. You do need to paint it but not very frequently, because it is less porous and more thermally stable than wood and the paint hangs on longer.

It is not a good idea to paint vinyl windows, particularly a dark color. The vinyl can too hot and warp.

  • Can you paint vinyl siding that is on the inside of an enclosed porch? if so do i need special paint? thanks

We painted our vinyl siding about 15 years ago and it's holding up great. No fading, scratching , etc. Buy a GOOD exterior paint. Can you paint vinyl siding that is on the inside of an enclosed porch? if so do i need special paint? thanks
Painting vinyl (plastic) with ordinary latex paint will probably work for a time, especially if the conditions it is applied in are perfect. However, I doubt it will last very long before it starts cracking and peeling. Vinyl tends to expand and contract a lot with the changes in the weather and especially temperature.

Krylon has come out with a spray product that is made especially for pvc (plastic) furniture and if the area you are wanting to paint isn't too awfully big, then krylon might be an answer for you. Good Luck!

Can you mix vinyl silk with matt paint?

Paints fall into either of two categories. Water or oil based. You can usually mix two of the same category together (very occasionally not) water and water or oil and oil, but you cannot mix oil and water based paints.

Look at the instructions on the tin. If they say thin the paint and clean brushes with water they are water based, if they say clean brushes and thin with white spirit, they are oil based. Can you mix vinyl silk with matt paint?

What is the difference between Latex and Vinyl paints?

Latex is derived from plant sap (rubber plant). Vinyl is derived from ethylene which is derived from petroleum. Bla bla bla. You can have latex vinyl paints. The vinyl, or even an acrylic will help in making the paint more durable (washable). Hope this helps.

Please can anyone advise me on the best way to re-paint over vinyl silk emulsion?

You want the paint to sit nice, you may get away with going straight over with the same/similar emulsion (vinyl silk), but I would always take pride and prefer to take a Sunday, and sand the whole rooms walls top2bottom and get a mask thing particularly if the ceiling is involved, and usually unless your walls are buggered they will paint like brand new again *Very important to brush them dowm after sanding is complete*Please can anyone advise me on the best way to re-paint over vinyl silk emulsion?
use vinyl silk emulsionPlease can anyone advise me on the best way to re-paint over vinyl silk emulsion?
Um with a roller. I just do it.
    Use any paint you like!
You don't need to take any extra precautions. Pick your color and go!
Use Sugar Soap (from Wickes, B%26amp;Q, Focus, Homebase) to clean old grease/dirt from wall, then paint. Cut the edges in with a brush, the use a roller for the bulk.
you have to rough the suffice up first by gently rubbing with sand paper and i mean gentle it enables the paint to stick to it

Can vinyl siding be painted with regular exterior paint?

Certainly, I did mine and it's perfect, looks like new siding. Can vinyl siding be painted with regular exterior paint?
yesCan vinyl siding be painted with regular exterior paint?
It will not last. It will peel.

There are undercoats for vinyl, but may be expensive. Check with your supplier.
Yes, Make sure it is VERY clean then use an exterior latex primer and exterior latex paint... DO NOT use an oil based paint or primer.
Yeah but I would use spray paint
    yes
You need to pressure wash the siding, then use a primer formulated for the task. Your home center should have an ample supply.

As a side note...Wouldn't this be a good time to consider replacing the vinyl? Hardi Plank siding holds paint much longer than wood, is impervious to fire, and has substantially more impact resistance than vinyl.
They have special paints for this. It's not cheap, but less than new siding. Call a paint store like Benjamin Moore and ask someone who can direct you. They probably dont' sell it there, but may have ideas of a company. Otherwise, just type in the keywords online and see what you find.

  • Which type of Primer/Paint should I use for wood panels and Vinyl Wallpaper?

I am going to paint the wallpaper, NOT remove it, and over some wood panels... so I would like to know what kind of primer and paint is necessary for such work!

I hear oil based is thin and more difficult to deal with...

I was thinking water-based primer and latex-based paint... would that work?

Thanks!Which type of Primer/Paint should I use for wood panels and Vinyl Wallpaper?
Oil based primer is hard to work with, smells bad, is thin, blah, blah, blah. The reason oil based primer is still around is that under certain circumstances it is so far and away a better solution.

I've done the wallpaper thing many, many times. You need to remove any loose wallpaper. Feather that rip line with sheetrock compound. Super easy to do. Home Depot guys can talk you through it if you don't know how. Then prime the entire surface with a product by Zinsser called Coverstain. It will harden like a rock and actually suck the wallpaper to the sheetrock behind.

Just remember this rule. Generally, you can paint latex over oil but not oil over latex. Latex moves a little and oil does not. So when the latex primer moves it will crack the oil finish coat.

As for the paneling, you can really use the same product. Depending on how long you want this to last, you should maybe degloss it first. There is a product called deglosser that you wipe on and wipe off, young grasshopper. If the paneling has a glossy finish on it, it will take that off so the primer sticks better.Which type of Primer/Paint should I use for wood panels and Vinyl Wallpaper?

sure tremclad just clean the siding washing with soap and water then check for any peeling that u may find then paint over its rust paint but works for siding too many people change the colour or the siding fadedVinyl siding paint?
Yes. Clean it well and use a quality latex paint. Paint the ends of the siding when it is cool so you will not see the old paint during colder weather when the siding contracts.
go for a primer then a latex paint.
Go to your local paint store( preferably a Ben-Moore, Sher-Williams or Porter, home depot and lowes products are inferior) tell them what your painting. Get a good primer(tinted to the color so you dont do more coats than necessary) follow the prep.instructions and finish with a good finish paint
Plastic primer first. Leave a day or two to dry good. Then any paint(latex is best as it is flexible)

Does emulsion paint cover vinyl silk paint?

my childrens bedroom is painted deep blue and dark red, i want to change it to light colours, so need to know if emulsion would cover the silk paint before painting it againDoes emulsion paint cover vinyl silk paint?
Vinyl Silk is an emulsion paint. You get Matt or Vinyl silk finishes of emulsion

A couple of coats of white emulsion will take away the dark colour then you can paint it to your likingDoes emulsion paint cover vinyl silk paint?
it will but you will have to put an undercoat on first
Yes emulsion will cover silk paint as silk paint is an emulsion. But first I would cover the walls with a base of white Matt emulsion, this will give a better base for your light coloured emulsion paint. As this is a children's bedroom I would suggest that you get a vinyl silk emulsion (silk emulsion is wipe-able with a damp cloth) as the paint to go over the walls where you have painted them white.

I do hope that this is of help to you. If you use undercoat as someone has suggested it will take a while to dry and will make the room smell for a day at least as undercoat is an oil based paint, and this is totally unnecessary.
Yes it does, but you will need 2, 3 or even more coats of emulsion and even then the darker colours will bleed through.
Yes but having two children of my own, I'd recommend sticking to a vinyl silk emulsion - it's much easier to wipe clean!
hi yes it will cover may need more than one coat ive done it many times
Yeah no problem wil just need 2 or 3 coats to cover it.
Unless you go over the walls with white emulsion first then the colour you paint on the wall will always come out as a darker shade.

  • What Paint is similar to Dupli-Color Vinyl & Fabric?

I like to use Dupli-color Vinyl %26amp; Fabric spray paint, yet the stores i go to don't carry a lot of them. which other paints are similar to what this spray paint does?

i would ask the people who work there, but they have no clue lolWhat Paint is similar to Dupli-Color Vinyl %26amp; Fabric?
Dupli-Color Products group is part of the Sherwin-Williams

company in Cleveland, OH. You should be able to get

just about any of their paints from any dealer, or

    distributor of Sherwin-Williams paints.

Now, since there is little difference in a vinyl paint, and

a paint used on fabrics that are usually mostly automotive,

you can also go to a dealer for PPG paints. PPG has the

most varieties of paints used in the automotive industry,

as well as just about any other you might want. Most

auto paint distributor stores will also have a comparable

product, and their people are among the very best in

knowing their products. Find out where autobody shops

buy their paints, and go to that store for information.

Don't expect to find much in the way of small spray

cans, though. Even though a store might carry some,

they are into the professional paints, in case you want

the very best, and have what is needed to apply it.

follow the paining of the basic eye's with the outlining of the eyes in a very dark grey or black, then bring the eye-lids down to almost covering the outline of the eye, this keeps it from having the pop-eye look, give a touch of high-gloss to the middle of hte eye to make it look wet and you should have it done.

just in case the top itself is old no holes etc go to walmart shoe dept and get 2 cans of the silicone water repellent mostly used for suede shoes etc and apply several coats,. let each one dry before re spraying . the fabric looses its repellency over time. and this may help. its great for outside coats and hunting boots also i use it on my outwear hunting work jackets etc and the old ladies cloth top for her new jeep also and i wished she leave the hard top on all the time changing each seasons a pain .. but if your talking of windshield glass area leaks get the glass sealer ..

If it's latex, you can probably peel most of it off, and then use a plastic bristle brush (with warm water) to scrub up the rest.

I wouldn't try any type of paint thinner as that may remove the top layer of your floor and cause it to have a dull spot.HELP!!!!! How can I get dried paint cleaned off of a vinyl floor??
    paint thinner or gasoline

take an old rag and put a bit of either on but not both

then rub it on the paint

take a clean cloth and wipe it dry
paint thinner. ......... ( MAKE HIM CLEAN IT UP )
try goof off just be sure to open a window because it will make you appear drunk if used in a clased space
if it's a water based paint, it should be easy to remove, you can try some products like dirtex, or krud kutters, those are pretty good at cleaning things up.

Is it OK to paint a radiator with vinyl silk?

Yes, as long as you get a good key on the radiator by lightly sanding it with a P80 grade sand paper. Then wipe with a damp cloth to get the dust off. Radiator enamal paint is ok but is horrible to use. The finish is not the same and you have to build it up with a couple of coats which makes the radiator less effecient.

It is also advisable to turn the rad off and let the paint dry naturally.

The preferred method of the professionals is to use a good make (Dulux or better still Permoglaze) Eggshell finish in the colour you want.Any paint store will mix it for you for about 拢8.00 per litre. It is a very durable finish and looks like enamal paint.

Have funIs it OK to paint a radiator with vinyl silk?
think it might crack with the heat...you are better off using proper radiator enamel paint. Is it OK to paint a radiator with vinyl silk?
It's fine to use vinyl silk, not a problem so long as you let the paint dry naturally before turning on the heating.

    yes

no but you could use eggshell paint

yes but it will eventually flake as will all paint even the radiator brand paint will. make sure its cold when applying
no problem ..i have done it many times
You could try but the heat may affect it.You can buy radiator paint which will probably be the safest thing to do.

Do you think a vinyl hot tub cover can be painted? What kind of paint?

I would think that the new Krylon paints for plastics would be about the only type of paint I would even try on a vinyl hot tub cover. Since Krylon works on plastics which are petroleum based as is vinyl, it should stick.Do you think a vinyl hot tub cover can be painted? What kind of paint?

Can you paint wallpaper if its not vinyl and in great shape?

Yes you can, however, anytime you get wallpaper saturated you run the risk of reactivating the adhesive which could cause the paper to release from the wall. You will need to prime first using an acrylic bonding primer or one specifically made for this purpose. Roman Adhesives makes a product called UltraPrime. It is a low moisture primer for this type of application. Sherwin-Williams Prep Rite Bonding Primer is another great choice. Can you paint wallpaper if its not vinyl and in great shape?
Yep, as long as it's well-adhered to the wall. You'll want to use a good primer like Kilz first, though.

i have just bought a fiat grande punto stripes limited edition but i want to remove the stripe from the roof of the car and then on the bonnet with out damaging the paintHow do i remove a vinyl from exterior of my car without damaging paint work?
I used to work in a sign shop that did custom vinyl lettering and stripes. It wasn't my job, but the girls in the vinyl department showed me what to do.

    1. Gently heat part of the stripe with a blow dryer. Be really careful to not overheat the paint though. Keep picking at the sticker until you get it to start lifting. If you are careful, you can get it almost completely off in large chunks.

    2. Clean the area with WD40 or mineral spirits to get rid of any leftover adhesive.

    3. Wash the area with degreasing detergent like Dawn Dishwashing Liquid.

    4. If you are going to restripe, wipe the area down with alcohol or some other evaporative solvent that will take off any last grease, wax, or oil.

    5. If you are just going with plain paint, give the area a nice coat of wax.

When you are done, you shouldn't be able to tell the stripe was even there. How do i remove a vinyl from exterior of my car without damaging paint work?
well done freak show..... 10 pts for you. only thing i can add is that once you start to heat the vinyl, use a thin soft plastic scraper to lift the edge of vinyl off the paint.

You can use paint on them. You will probably save money on paint. Buy a good brand of paint so you will not have to paint them as often.
U can paint the indoor and the outdoor vinyl shutters with any plastic or acrylic paint after you rough the cleaned surface with delicate sand paper, or you can polish the interior ones with baby oil to give them fresher look without sanding and painting. I tried and liked both solutions. Good luck.
there is a good paint for it. however ruff it up a little. If you can remove them form the house and spray the paint onto the shutters. You will find that it will chip and peel after a time. If you replace the shutter find a higher end vinyl. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

Try mineral spirits first. Clean thoroughly, use a scraper if you need to. If that doesn't get it all, a little nail polish remover might help. Latex paint is water-based so it's easier than oil-based. In any case, once you're done, be sure to wash the floor well with soap and water. You don't want to leave any cleaning residue on the floor.

What kind of paint can i use on vinyl siding?

    vinyl siding shouldn't need painting...

but if you must, use something water resistant

if you're planning to paint ALL of the vinyl use something that is quick drying... if it's just a couple of spots, then regular drying paint is okay...

but again, if it was real vinyl, it shouldn't need to be painted... if you're looking to just change colors, try calling whoever put the vinyl siding on and talk to themWhat kind of paint can i use on vinyl siding?
I'd suggest using a latex highly adhesive primer to meant to cover plastics and oil paints (check your paint store to see what brands they carry), then paint your finishing coats with Latex Exterior Semi-gloss paint. If it's a small amount of painting, 'Krylon' makes a spray paint meant specifically for plastic, low porous, flexible surfaces called Plasticoat.
100 percent acrylic. If it's real dirty all you need to do is get a scrub brush dish washing soap hot water and elbow grease. Real easy and it turns out great! I just did mine last week.
You don't want to paint vinyl siding. Vinyl siding is designed so you don't have to paint it. If you paint it then you will have to begin the yearly upkeep of painting which is a PAIN. If you don't like the color then the ideal thing to do would be to put up a color you like.
How old is the vinyl siding? You might be able to just pressure wash it, if you just want it to look clean. If you want a different color, depending on how old it is, probably exterior latex.
Happens to be my field of real expertise... exterior latex semi-gloss will be the best adhesion properties and easily washable with a hose, but be ready to replace all the siding in a few years cause nothing will last longer than that on vinyl siding. Do not use oil-based paints. They are not plyable and will crack terribly as expansion and contraction occur from heat and cold. Take this answer to the bank!
It's ok to paint vinyl siding, but the prep takes a little time. You must ruff it up even if it already has an imprint of would grain or design imprint you can use a vibrating sander with say an 80 grit paper. After that you must still prepare the surface with kiltz to prime the siding. You can use the oil base kiltz or the latex base either one. At this point you have a great surface to apply the color of exterior paint you like. As long as it is exterior paint.

  • How to paint vinyl floors?

Porch paint does work well on vinyl floors, as does acrylic and latex. To get the most durability for the long term, however, prime the vinyl floor first with Kilz or Bin stain blocking primer. These products give the surface which is slick some tooth for the paint to adhere. Also, I strongly recomment sealing with a non-yellowing polyurethane and at least 3 coats. This will prolong the life of the paint, keep it from wearing or flaking off in high traffic areas. How to paint vinyl floors?
On an episode of Debbie Travis, she put down a vinyl floor, and since she wanted to customize the colour, she primed it, painted it the colour she wanted, and then coated it with polyurethane. It looked absolutely beautiful, and although it may take all day waiting for the different paints to dry, it goes on very easy, with just a roller! How to paint vinyl floors?
I painted an old vinyl floor (it was vinyl tiles) because it looked bad and I figured ';what do I have to lose?';. I painted the first coat with grey porch paint (because it expands and contracts) and then I came over it with a darker blue and I sponged that on. I tell you, the floor came out great!! It looked brand new. I would advise you to use the porch paint because its more durable and flexes. Godloveya.

I have vinyl decking and I want to paint it a different color. What kind of paint do I use??

With knowing the BRAND of composite deck material, but knowing TREX to be one of the first, though I hear complaints all the time,,,they have made improvements.

First of all consider that composition. Pretty much like MDF, or as I rudely like to say ';GLIT';. Actually as it evolves it will hopefully replace the clear cutting of forests. It's a great factory tour too BTW, should you ever get the notion.

To Paint it, and with all due respect to another answer, DO NOT use Latex.

Epoxy based paints and similar; specific to exterior use will NOT degrade the deck substance, and given a proper dry/cure time can last as long, and hold up as well as anything you could paint over concrete.

Your issue will remain however, in that being an exterior surface, subject to the environment and wear that any floor gets, you'll likely have to maintain it.

While I totally understand someones desire to change a color, I may never understand it, as it regards a DECK no matter the material.

Spray windex heavily on the window and use a sharp single edge razor blade at an angle to scrape off the vinyl.

yes, they do sell floor paint.

Its basically paint with grit in it so you don't slip and fall.

All paint companies carry it and they can mix it into any color.

Cost the same as regular paint

I can tell you the following- it's a quick fix- it looks great at first and then starts to get worn and dirty looking after a year.

It's very hard to paint white or a dark color like red. You best bed is to do a meduim or light shade like pink, light blue or green. This will give you the best covarge. I did white the first time and it took 3 coats and never looked as nice as I wanted- the underneath floor was like skin peach color.

Also pay close attention to the drying time. And you might have to strip the finish off the vinyl floor before applying.

    Good luck.

Another idea which cost more then paint but still cheaper- you can buy cheap peel and stick floors to put over your old floor. Same thing though- they start to fall apart in a year or two from wear.

The paint wears- but you can just repaint in another year or two. I painted my kitchen floor 3 times in 5 years- the final time was when I sold it.
Actually, you can paint tile, but it would look worse! You may consider charity orginizations that recycle goods for resale. Can i paint over vinyl siding?

ineed to paint over siding need to know howCan i paint over vinyl siding?
you have one problem with painting vinyl siding that nobody has mentioned.

vinyl siding expands and contracts a lot with the heat and cold. if you paint in warm weather the lap joints will expose the unpainted surface under the lap during cold weather. if you are going to paint allow for that and/or paint it the same color.

you could power wash the siding and see it that fixes the problem. you'd have to wash it to prep for paint anyhow. Can i paint over vinyl siding?
Yes, it is possible.Vinyl siding paint works best when it is a blend of urethane and acrylic resin.

Vinyl siding tends to flex with heat and cold. Because of this, regular paint would not work. The flexing would break the bond of the paint to the vinyl. With the new special vinyl paint, it can be done.

You should pick a color that is lighter than your present siding. When you go darker, it tends to absorb the heat, and we are back to the bonding issue.

You can special order this paint at any paint store. Make sure you tell him what you are using it for, and insist on a warranty that it will adhere.
Any 100% acrylic paint will do and yes try to stay with the lighter colors as the darker absorb the heat. Go to a reputable paint store like Benjamin Moore for more information STAY away from the big box stores! Good luck Les the painter
i have heard that it is possible. i would ask at my local home depot/ Lowe's if there is a certain type of paint available.

Easy off oven cleaner also works and is less expensiveIs there a spray that will melt away vinyl lettering on a car without hurting the paint?
try using a blowdryer to heat it up start at one end and take your time then use some rubbing compound to polish it back up
use oven cleaner. e-z off works best. i have used it for years to remove lettering off of semis and it wont hurt your paint. spray it on let it set for a bit, depending on how old the lettering is and rub it off, rinse with a hose.

well yes but you will need to use a primer coat or two as emulsion will be absorbed into the wood as it is a water based paint.

I want to paint a scene on a RV vinyl tire cover. What is the best kind of paint to use, that will bond?

I want something that won't peel off.I want to paint a scene on a RV vinyl tire cover. What is the best kind of paint to use, that will bond?
If you key the cover first with 1000 wet and dry or you can use a grey scotch pad with soap and water. then use aerosol plastic primer (these are available at most bodyshop suppliers)

then you could clear lacquer over your design and over the entire cover.

as for the paint for the design its self if you use a solvent based car paint such as cellulose it shouldn't react with anything on the cover at the moment or the lacquer.

How can I paint walls in my home that are vinyl covered wallboard?

we live in a modular home that has vinyl covered sheetrock - I want to remove the strips between the sheets and paint the wallsHow can I paint walls in my home that are vinyl covered wallboard?
howdee--after you remove the strips , make sure there are no staples sticking out, tape and mud seams with joint compound, this is a good time to also fix any defect in the walls , like where pictures were hanging and etc , using a good 6 '; knife, lite weight joint compond , which can be bought in 1 gallon bucket, works best it 's smoother, be sure to stir it up real good, as this makes it go on even smoother, apply 3 coats, allowing it each coat to dry over nite, or you can use 20 minute compound, it comes in a powder form and you mix water with it and dries in 20 minutes or less ,lightly sanding between coats, apply a good coat of sealer -primer paint, now you are ready to apply the finish coat, no matter what brand, cost range or color, be sure to apply 2 good coats, we use a flat or matte finish , hope this helps a little bitHow can I paint walls in my home that are vinyl covered wallboard?
Reapply another layer of sheetrock, tape the seams, prime and paint.

What are the effects of a vinyl ';wrap'; on a car's paint job?

I have original paint, nothing after-marketWhat are the effects of a vinyl ';wrap'; on a car's paint job?
Nothing really? my uncle owns a shop that does that kinda stuff, it just peels right off afterward. Sometimes it leaves a little adhesive behind, but that comes off with a little washing, so nothing big. I've never seen it peel off paint or anything, unless a company is using a really cheap vinyl with a strong adhesive, it shouldn't damage the paint. We did a wrap on a Accord once, took it off to change it a couple years after and the car looked brand new underneath, no paint damage, and only a couple spots where it had a little adhesive, but that came off in 5 mins. The only negative is for people that don't get a full wrap and keep it for long, because having a vinyl on top of paint prevents that area of paint from fading from sun exposure, so when you peel it off, it looks new, while areas around it that weren't covered, are slightly faded, and usually its noticeable after 6 months of using a vinyl and living in a area where there's a lot of sun. What are the effects of a vinyl ';wrap'; on a car's paint job?
Depending on the type of adhesive that is used, you may a have slight residue after removing the wrap. But it's nothing a good carwash can't clean off. If a good adhesive is used, there won't be any problems.
Any place the vinyl does not cover will get more faded over time than the paint that is covered.

Will kilz paint cover up vinyl wallpaper so i can paint it?

the wallpaper is white background with fruit on it.Will kilz paint cover up vinyl wallpaper so i can paint it?
Yes, you can paint primer over wall paper so you can paint. Be sure to use an OIL based primer otherwise with a water based primer it will loosen the wall paper and it will peel. You don't want that! Will kilz paint cover up vinyl wallpaper so i can paint it?
I know its a pain but your better off removing the wall paper
It should. You might need more than one coat, though.
Just tried this last month. In short- no. There is nothing that will paint over wallpaper and not peel off in a few weeks. i know it stinks, but you have to remove the wallpaper first!
Kilz may not be necessasary, although I would recommend removing the wallpaper first. Applying the paint might cause the vinyl to bubble up or let loose at the seams.. If your wall was properly prepared for vinyl application, It should be much easier to remove than regular paper wallpaper.. If you dont want to do that... There are some products available at paint stores (ie: Sherwin Williams etc..) that can be used to prep the vinyl for painting. They act as a kind of sealer/glue to keep the vinyl from letting loose when you paint it. We have used this a few times on jobs.. Plus, how long your vinyl has been on the wall could make a difference... If it is fairly new, then the glue will probably hold better.. The older it gets, the more brittle it becomes. I would recommend speaking with a paint store about the product i mentioned if you choose not to remove the vinyl... Hope this helps.

(Im a project manager for a commercial painting co.)
Vinly is very tough to get anything to stick to but it is very easy to remove, use a fingernail to get a corner started and pull it off the wall.
Is it textured or smooth? Some smooth, coated paper doesn't paint well. Test a section first. You can buy Kilz in a small amount or a spray can to test the area. Also be sure that the paper is on very securely or the edges may peel back when paint is applied because of the moisture in the paint. Good Luck with your project.
I would strongly suggest removing the wallpaper first. The paper can slowly peel off or bubble. Then your whole paint job will be ruined and you'll finally have to take it off anyways.

However, if the paper is in good condition and you really don't want to take the time to take it off, you can paint over it. Kilz will block the background and set as a good base for your regular paint.
