Can you safely paint vinyl siding a shade darker than its original color?

I have to paint a storage building that is sided with white vinyl siding, to a light/medium shade of gray to match our new homes vinyl siding. I have seen a warning on some of the paints I am considering using that you shouldn't paint vinyl darker than the original color, only lighter. It says it can warp the vinyl due to heat absorption. Does anyone know how true this is? Is it only for really dark shades of paints?

It is true, you should stick to the original color or a slightly darker shade. The vinyl might not warp, but the paint will eventually blister and peel especially on the sunny sides of the shed if you use anything that is much different from the original color.


Try a pale gray, it might not match the house but at least if will be gray. But nothing more than a pastel base (or Base 1) whichever the paint company use.Can you safely paint vinyl siding a shade darker than its original color?
Why you do not ask at a vinyl dealer? Or you can check at a paint store or go to Home Depot and ask in the remodeling department.
